Gas Generation & Carbon Capture – Nottinghamshire

The gas generation and carbon capture project in Worksop, Nottinghamshire represents a pioneering step forward in sustainable energy production. Set to begin generating electricity for thousands of homes by the second quarter of the year, the full facility will be operational by year-end.

This first-of-its-kind plant not only provides a cleaner, more efficient energy solution but also serves as a key hub for future research and development. The site supports the UK’s transition towards net zero, combining natural gas-powered engines with an innovative carbon capture system that converts flue gas into consumable, food-grade CO₂. This CO₂ can then be stored and supplied to the food and drink industry, turning emissions into a valuable resource.

First Connect Utility Solutions delivered significant gas infrastructure works to support the facility’s dual-generation and carbon capture capabilities.

Key Benefits

Future-proof infrastructure to support both energy generation and CO2 capture.

Precise, compliant installation meeting stringent technical and industrial standards.

Improved operational flexibility through dual metering for separate system.

Support for sustainability goals, enabling food grade CO2 production and reduced environmental impact.

Robust engineering solutions for a long MP route installation using proven open-cut methods.

Outcome

First connect successfully:

  • Installation of 622M of 250mm MP main to specification.

  • Delivered two-meter installations supporting dual aspects of the plan (generation and carbon capture) .

  • Completed all works safely and efficiently using open-cut methods.

  • Provided high-intensity, future-ready infrastructure to enable sustainable, low-carbon energy production.

  • Contributed to a project that will supply power to thousands of homes and support national net-zero.

Our Approach

First Connect deployed experienced engineering and deliver teans to design and construct the required infrastructure safely and efficiently.

Key elements of our delivery included:

  • Installation of Medium Pressure (MP) Gas mains via open cut method.

  • Installation of two independent gas meters: one dedicated to power generation and one to the carbon capture system.

  • Careful coordination with site operators and technical partners to ensure seamless integration with onsite systems.

  • Full compliance with GIRS and industry standards throughout all installation and commissioning stages.

This approach ensured the infrastructure was delivered with precision to meet the facility’s unique operational needs.
